40 ideas to improve your website's conversion rate
Not all of these may need to be used.
Use your best judgement.
- Call to action in menu.
- Call to action near top/right of the screen (in addition to menu)
- Call to action stands out and is a different color than other elements on the page. And is very clear that it is a clickable element.
- Call to action near the bottom as well, if the page is long.
- Experiment with different call to action wording. For example maybe “Buy Now at a 50% Savings!” would be better than “Buy Now!”
- Call to action on all information pages.
- Review wording in all links. For example: maybe “Learn How We Are Different” would be better than “Learn More” (but try not to wordy)
- Easily found pricing from home page.
- Too much or too little text. General rule is to give a quick explanation with links so if someone wants to learn more they can. The average person will decide if they want to stay on your page within the first 5 seconds. Too many words can scare them away, too few can not provide them with enough info. (Also search engines want to see about 800 words per page)
- Provide real testimonials if you can.
- Provide credibility icons on your site. For example, if you belong to an association and they have a logo share it near the bottom of your page. Or if you have an SSL certificate on your sites also share that. Other examples: “Made in the USA”, “Non-GMO”, etc.
- Display payment logos, like which credit cards you accept.
- If it is a local business provide a map with your address.
- If it is a local business provide your hours of operation.
- Display a phone number on the site.
- Provide instant chat on your site.
- Show benefits of your products and services not just features. For example: “32GB of Storage” could be said, “Store over 6000 songs on this large 32GB drive”.
- Make sure your titles and headers are relevant and not to vague.
- Does the site offer any proof of statements.
- Are there any guarantees? If so provide a seal of your guarantee.
- Does the site offer free shipping? If so make sure it is prominently displayed.
- Does your site need a video? The average visitor would rather watch a video than read a bunch of text. But keep it short and professional, 30-60 seconds.
- Display social icons, so people can like and share you.
- Images are happy. Even if you sell antidepressants don’t show depressed people.
- Less fields in forms. Or have people go through multiple steps to fill out large forms.
- Stick to your colors of your theme and no more than 3 major colors.
- Colors are a good contrast from each other. Text is legible.
- Get a professional designer. An amature looking site can scare people off.
- Are there too many places to go? Too many links? Don’t confuse the visitor.
- Are your words too big? Use common easy to understand words.
- Don’t use industry words and terms. Or if you do make sure you tell people what they mean.
- Split paragraphs up into different blocks and have bullet points to outline benefits.
- Place featured products on home page.
- If you sell products make sure that it is clear that you have a shopping cart and it is easy to find.
- If you sell products make sure the checkout button is labeled and in the top/right corner.
- Should you offer a free trial? Or maybe a $1 trial?
- If you have a lot of products or information provide a search feature.
- Offer a newsletter subscription or push notification subscription.
- Do you offer an upsell item?
- Is your site too slow?
